Student Groups at Manhattan School of Music are designed to give students an opportunity to build leadership and interpersonal skills, while contributing to the Manhattan School of Music community.

Each student group works with the Student Engagement Office, and is organized by students with common interests. Students are invited to initiate and register their group with the Office at the start of each academic year. Groups are open to full-time Manhattan School of Music students in good standing.

Alpha Psi Omega

Alpha Psi Omega is a theatre honor society providing acknowledgement to those demonstrating a high standard of accomplishment in theatre and offering fellowship for those interested in theatre. Students must qualify for membership to the society.

Beyond the Binary

Beyond the Binary is a student led organization geared towards promoting understanding and awareness in relation to transgender education. We host movie nights, discussions, community outreach, and performance opportunities to explore topics such as gender identity and transgender history. Our club aims to uplift transgender voices in the performance industry by spotlighting transgender composers and musicians. Whether you are transgender, questioning, or simply an ally, you are welcome here. We seek opportunities for community building to transform tolerance into understanding to better provide a welcoming environment for transgender individuals. Join us in building a more informed and compassionate community, where everyone can thrive regardless of their gender identity!

Black Student Union

The purpose of the Black Student Union is to provide a sense of unity, support, and cooperation among the black students at Manhattan School of Music. In addition, this organization will provide educational and social opportunities for the entire Manhattan School of Music community to come together to learn about and celebrate the rich heritage, history, and contributions of persons of African ancestry. This will be done by sponsoring cultural activities and educational workshops relating to African heritage and culture. All Manhattan School of Music students are welcome.

Chinese Student Association

The Manhattan School of Music Chinese Student Association (MSM-CSA) is a student organization that serves Chinese students. The MSM-CSA is committed to fostering connections between Chinese international students overseas and highlighting Chinese culture for the MSM community.

Intervarsity Christian Fellowship

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is a community of students from different cultural and religious backgrounds drawn together by a common interest in exploring the Christian faith and its relation to all of life. IVCF is a campus ministry that encourages honest, thoughtful exploration of spiritual issues through hospitable small group Bible studies, large group gatherings, and off-campus retreats. IVCF at MSM strives to hold weekly meetings and one larger event per month where they will present speakers to share about the intersection of faith, life, and music.

Jewish Student Union

Jewish Student Union serves to give voice to the Jewish students within the community, adding to the cultural diversity of MSM. The group works to build camaraderie among Jewish students through their meetings and programs and aspires to educate students, faculty, and staff about Anti-Semitism today and of the past.

Latine Student Alliance

The Latine Student Alliance is an organization intending to create a diverse, educational, and inclusive community of Latine Students within MSM. We celebrate our music, history, traditions, literature, art, dance, food, and much more. Every person at MSM is welcome. LSA provides a broader knowledge about the Hispanic and Latine culture. Now more than ever, it is very important for musicians to have an understanding and respect for all cultures.

MSM Briefing

The MSM Briefing is Manhattan School of Music’s official student newspaper. Our mission is to keep our community informed, by covering events, concerts, and recitals, keeping up with alumni, and reporting on student, faculty, and community well-being. We want to give students the opportunity to report on goings on not only here on campus, but the many amazing music scenes here in New York City through the many amazing connections we have here. We welcome anyone who enjoys writing, photography, or editing, and we welcome any level of commitment.

MSM Lavender Society

The MSM Lavender Society is an identity-based organization designed to encourage queer students to find their community through community events, performance opportunities, regular meetings with guest artists, and more! Our main goal is to make MSM a more comfortable, safe, communal place for queer-identifying students and allies. MSM Run Club

MSM Run Club is a group open to all levels of runners. We meet on Saturday mornings at 8am in front of MSM and run throughout Morningside Heights. We hope to build community through being active and supporting each other’s fitness goals. MSM Run Club is a supportive group of musicians that wants to better themselves and each other.

MSM Soccer Club

We play on the soccer fields of Riverside Park (102nd street) on the weekends!

ANYONE WITH ANY SKILL LEVEL IS INVITED. We’re not looking for the next Cristiano Ronaldo or the next Marta… The goal is to have a good time and to connect a healthy activity with a bonding experience with MSM students!!

MSM Womxns is a feminist group on campus that works to provide good to the womxn of MSM and in the NYC community. Through charity, and fun events MSM Womxns creates a welcoming and passionate environment for students on campus looking to get into communal and political work.

Student Government Association

The MSM Student Government Association is the school’s largest group, whose mission is to provide a forum and voice for the student body at large. Student Government works to enrich the MSM student experience through providing opportunities for engagement and leadership development. Student Government is comprised of representatives from all majors offered at MSM, sponsoring diverse events during the year, including social activities and discussion forms. Student Government is open to all students – any enrolled student is welcome to participate as a member at large.

SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) Student Union

SWANA is a decolonial and geographical term that represents the various communities located in South West Asia and North Africa. Another term used to describe the region is the Middle East and North Africa(MENA).

This Student Union will serve as a platform within Manhattan School of Music to organize concerts, lectures, and workshops to showcase SWANA region music.

The Black Rose Literary Society

The Black Rose Literary Society serves as a book club and literary society for MSM. We are a place for people to discuss the deeper meaning and themes in modern literature including novels, plays, TV dramas, films, manga, even plots of video games. In the language of flowers, the black rose stands for change and rebirth. We, as students and people, are constantly changing, learning, and entering new phases of our lives.

Starting a New Organization

If you’re interested in starting a new group we invite you to register through this form: MSM Student Group Organization Request Form. A student must have completed one full semester at MSM before initiating the creation of a new student organization. New student organizations are approved and funded on an annual basis. Please email Student Engagement (studentengagement@bianlifan.com) if you have any questions.

Policies

Private clubs or organizations of any nature that are not specifically supervised by a member of Manhattan School of Music’s administrative staff are not allowed to actively recruit MSM students.

The School reserves the right to take action against a student group for conduct prohibited by the School’s standards of personal and group conduct. Such acts of misconduct by students engaged in organized activities of registered student organizations, whether committed on or off campus, are subject to disciplinary action. An organized activity is any activity that is conducted under the auspices, sponsorship, or supervision of a registered student organization.
